Sarah E. Goode, who was aimed into slavery, received a patent in the US for her folding cabinet bed in 1885.

All during the end of the Civil War when segregation forced out our female inventors of color.
"The bed was engineered in such a way that the bed could be lifted, and folded without breaking, a novel feat at the time. There was also a supplementary system included in the design that supported the bed's center when unfolded and in use."
